Understanding the Seasons of the Aegean
The Greek weather is a major character in your island hopping story. From the legendary ‘Meltemi’ winds of July to the ‘Halcyon Days’ of January, knowing what to expect from the sky will dictate your beach choices and ferry plans. Here is the 2026 breakdown of the Greek climate.
Summer (June – August): Sun and the Meltemi
Summer in Greece is hot, with temperatures often reaching 35ยฐC (95ยฐF). The defining feature is the Meltemiยa dry, north wind that blows across the Aegean in July and August. While it provides a welcome cooling effect, it can make northern-facing beaches very wavy.
The Windy Side vs. The Protected Side
When you are on an island during a windy day, don’t stay in your hotel! Use the geography to your advantage. If the wind is from the North, head to the Southern beaches of the island, which will be calm and like a swimming pool. For example, on Mykonos, the northern Panormos beach will be wild, while southern Psarou will be perfectly still.
The ‘Shoulder’ Months (May, Sept, Oct)
In 2026, September is widely considered the ‘new July.’ The water is at its warmest, the crowds have thinned, and the Meltemi has died down. October remains excellent for the Dodecanese and Crete, where the southern latitude keeps the sun shining longer.
Winter and Bad Weather
In the rare event of a summer storm or high winds, ferries may be grounded. Beaches do not ‘close’ officially, but safety flags will indicate if swimming is dangerous. If the sea is too rough, this is the perfect time to explore the mountain villages and traditional taverns of the islandยs interior.
